Letter from the President
2011-2012

October 4, 2011

Dear Members of the Nevada Music Educators Association,

I hope this letter finds you in the groove of a great school year. I am excited to be taking over as President of NMEA and thank my predecessor, Anne Stephen, for her excellent leadership over the last two years. For my first letter to the membership, I have decided to present it in a newsletter format so you can find pertinent information quickly. Before I get into that though, I would like to take a moment to encourage you to get involved in NMEA. We can always use help with our many different events and appreciate any suggestions for improvement you may have. Remember, this organization is run by its members for its members and for the music students of Nevada! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns and I hope you have an excellent school year!

Sincerely,
Dan Barthel
NMEA President

MENC is now NAfME

Our organization of music educators and music education advocates was founded in 1907 as Music Supervisors National Conference, and later became Music Educators National Conference, with the familiar acronym "MENC." In 1998, the association became known as MENC: The National Association for Music Education. September 2011 marks the completion of the name transition to National Association for Music Education.

We gain much by calling ourselves an ‘Association’ rather than a ‘Conference’. This allows certain sponsorships and partnerships that have not been possible previously and also more aptly defines us as a professional organization. To aide in our branding, the national office is asking that we pronounce the acronym ‘N-A-f-M-E’, saying all of the letters separately. If you require one of the new logos for official NAfME communication or events (must be approved), please contact Dan Barthel.
